Yesterday I went on a trip down memory lane; visiting my ‘playground’ when I was a kid, 40 years ago. Together with my wife, on our 28th aniversary day, visiting Nairobi, Kenya, during a layover on our way to South Africa.
I was impressed with what I still knew/remember. Smells, stepping out the plane being welcomed by that typical East African scent, the flower scents and woodfires everywhere, but also the views and colours. So good to have that check knowing what I remember from then and the comparisson to now, how accurate and reliable ones memory is.
It was a very intense but great day, only have slept 3 hours within 36 hours, going on a private morning safari straight out of te plane in Nairobi National Park, lunching at THE restaurant from my childhood: Carnivore, visit a local beets factory supporting 2000 locals, getting a tour at my old school: Hillcrest Seconday School, and before leaving again, getting a tour of Karen Blixen’s house (Out of Africa) and having a typical Kenyan samosa at the airport.
Again, so many impressions, coming back alive from the past and creating new memories. Seeing how so little has changed, but also seeing the changes.
